Design a sailing dinghy just for training, design it to be the very best 12ft (3.65m) training dinghy in the world.
We visited 35 sailing clubs and sailing centres to find out their requirements for a training boat, we visited holiday sailing schools to get their list of requirements then combined together and produced a list of priorities to be achieved from the new boat.
We employed the best Naval Architect in the UK, Phil Morrison and backed that up with an unlimited budget. From our research the same priority list was repeated time and time again by many of the training centres.
What came back was they wanted a STABLE boat that gave confidence to any novice sailor and, with a centreboard fitted instead of the dagger board as used by other manufacturers would be a great advantage, comfortable seating, a dry cockpit, high boom and easy to reef the sail, with a boat that would handle well in big seas, with a choice of spinnaker system either asymmetric or symmetric to cater for all training disciplines.
Help us with training, make it hard to invert and easy to get back up by a novice but, make the boat sail like a normal boat that the sailor has to balance the boat but when it gets to the point of normal capsize, it stops to give that extra stability to a novice sailor and in-turn the confidence and the desire to come back and learn more and above all, comes off the water with a smile.
Give us a boat to maximise the return from our investment, make it suitable for a youth sailor or for one or two adults. Ensure it is not a heavy boat to handle but it must last the rigours of time.
The H12.2 has been exported to many countries and is used by holiday sailing companies, many of the leading sailing and training centres throughout the UK. The H12.2 is used by many families and has more than achieved its position in the sailing world.
We are proud to say all the benefits plus more have been achieved, we believe the H12.2 dingy is the most stable 12ft (3.65m) sailing dinghy in the world. The H12.2 was not designed to be a boring boat, with the right conditions it will get up and plain and be exciting to sail.
When we sell a new boat, Hartley Boats likes to complete a full boat handover. Not only to ensure that you understand how to rig your new boat but, most importantly that you get the best from your new investment and enjoy sailing the boat and come of the water wanting to return and sail again.
We at Hartley Boats are very proud of our standards and build quality, to demonstrate that statement we are the only manufacturer to offer a 4-year guarantee.
